Do you love working with your hands? If you do, working with wood can be a very relaxing hobby for you. Many people have the wrong concept that you have to invest thousands of dollars into expensive tools to work with wood. Remember not long ago, all woodworking and wood decoration were done by hand. Woodcarving is a skill that anyone can learn. Believe it or not you don’t have to be superbly artistic to carve wood.

There are many different types of carving that can be done on wood. Chip carving is a carving style that anyone who can create a design using a ruler and compass can learn easily. Furthermore, you only need two types of knives to learn to chip carve. Anyone who is old enough to learn to use the knives safely can learn to chip carve with a bit of practice.

Very intricate designs can be created from simple geometric patterns in chip carving. A chip knife and a stab knife are the two knives that are required to create beautiful works of art. There are many different types of knives that can be used for chip carving but these are the most used. As for wood you will need to purchase, you want a wood that is good for carving such as basswood. This wood can easily be order online or many craft stores carry it. Basswood is great because it is easily cut with or across the grain of the wood.  Basswood is not only light in color but it is also extremely light weight. You could also consider a wood such as butternut. Butternut is a slightly darker wood then basswood is.

Chip carving can be a starting point for other types of carving such as relief carving and whittling. Woodcarving can also move into other art forms of woodworking such as using a scroll saw to create intricate pictures, wood burning, and wood turning. Woodworking can be a very rewarding art form to enter into.

Going Blueberry Picking

One of the most fun things you can do with a weekend morning or afternoon is to go blueberry picking. If you have found a place where you will be able to do this, you might think the only thing you have to do in order to have a great day is simply “head out and start picking.” And while blueberry picking is certainly not complicated, there are still a few things you will want to make sure you keep in mind before you head out, in order to ensure that you have the best blueberry picking experience possible!

Wear old clothes: This is one to make sure you pay attention to, as no matter how careful you are during your blueberry picking excursion, you are likely to not only get the clothes you are going in dirty, but are even likely to ruin them; with dirt and sharp branches and messy blueberries everywhere around you, you will want to make sure you wear old clothes.

Protect against sunburn. You will be exposed to the sun when you are blueberry picking, and since you will be bending over and picking berries much of the time, you will put your ears and the back of your neck at risk of terrible sunburn; make sure you put on sunscreen before you start and re-apply throughout the day if you are out there for a long time.

Protect your back: If you are not careful, the constant “bending over and standing back up” of blueberry picking can really make your back hurt; make sure you use your legs as much as possible by squatting down instead of bending down, and give your legs and your back frequent breaks so that you do not end up with a “back ache souvenir” in addition to your blueberries!

It is easy for your “fun adventure” of blueberry picking to turn into a miserable experience but it is also easy to protect against this happening, so make sure you pay attention to these tips, and you will be able to have fun blueberry picking, without the bad stuff that can come with it.

How To Start A Career In The Arts

There are many people engage in creative activities, such as painting, making music, or writing for the pure fun of it – but for every one of these persons, there is another person who has a dream of engaging in such creative activity as a full-time “job.” One problem of course, is that most of the stories you hear or read of people who make a living in the arts details the amount of time these people put in before meeting their breakthrough, and in examining your own life, it can seem like there is no way your schedule will open up this much.

If you do not have a husband/wife, it will be much easier for you to make the necessary adjustments to move toward a profession in the arts, but if you are married, you will first have to make sure you discuss this move with your spouse; after all, you can still work full-time while moving toward a profession in the arts, but you will not have much free time on top of your job and your creative practice!
Once you have established that you, or you and your spouse, feel comfortable with you using your free time for a couple years to chase this dream, you will need to make sure you commit to yourself to give up or get discouraged – as you will undoubtedly have opportunities to get discouraged, and you will have to chase this discouragement away.

You can take the most important step of all after you have taken these first two steps: start saving up your vacation days, and pick a two week or better yet, a month-long span during which you can hide yourself away from the world, work on your creativity, and see what happens!

Some people are undoubtedly not destined to make their living in the arts, but until you take these steps to chase this dream yourself, you will never know whether you are or not!

Build A Home Brewery Fast And Cheap
A river of beer, flowing freely from your refrigerator as sexy bar-maids ladle it into frosty mugs for you as you watch the latest game.
Nice dream, huh?
Of course, dreams are only vanity. Let’s face the hard facts: There is no such thing as free beer.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but home brewed beer or wine is anything but free, as any hard-working brew master will tell you. So before deciding that you are going to be the next “craft brewer success story”, let’s look at the dirty side of home beer brewing.
First of all, brewing beer and wine means a lot of hard work. There are lots of preparations that you’ll have to take in order to start the brewing process, and most of those steps (especially bottling) require big boxes of bottles or bags of ingredients, think of all of the fruit required to make wine!
Further, all these items can be expensive…and we haven’t even discussed all of the tools and equipment required to turn those heavy items into beer. Hops, barley and yeast are all pretty expensive if you plan on brewing a good amount of quality beer. That’s just the cost of brewing, but even the equipment cost a hefty sum. A brewing “starter kit” can often be expensive.
And of course, all of this will be regulated by the FDA. Add that to the fact that it’s also an alcoholic beverage, and undertaking brew-mastery carries more liability than getting drunk at a singles bar. For example, States like Alabama and Utah currently prohibit home brewing! So double check with your local government before you start sending away for hops and stills as it could cost you more than the price of ingredients and equipment to make that tasty brew.
All of this does not mean that you shouldn’t get into home brewing…unless you live in Alabama. Then you should move. Other than that, it’s important to realize that while home brewing can at times be complicated or work intensive, the end result is beer that you brewed yourself.
